Columbus was a daring and brave explorer. He persevered for years with the single-minded vision of convincing Queen Isabella of Spain to allow him the ships, money and men for a voyage which would test the limits of the known world.
The Nina, Pinta and Santa Maria set sail. After 71 days at sea, battling unrest, mutiny, desperation and fear, Columbus and his crew finally sight land. It is San Salvador, a beautiful land where they meet the natives, trade goods and begin the difficult task of founding a Spanish colony. When Columbus arrives back in Spain he is hailed as a hero by some and regarded with suspension and jealousy by others. As he ages he is faced with his own immortality and the never-ending longing for discovery and adventure. The story of Columbus has been told countless times in a variety of ways, but the history of his explorations, struggles and successes are presented against a classic backdrop in this spectacular black and white 1949 version. We are happy to approve this film for ages 12+.
