Dove Review

“Rock Bottom and Back” is an incredible DVD viewing experience, based on the inspiring book of the same name, written by Susan Mustafa and Earl B. Heard. Hosted by actor Danny Trejo, the documentary features the struggles and hardships of both famous and unknown people. It vividly makes the point that bad times challenge everyone at one time or another.

The film chronicles testimonials of several survivors of hardship. For example, one man named David Bottner was raised by his grandmother and physically and sexually abused by her for two years. He struggled with drug use and had sex at age 12. He stooped to the level of striking his girlfriend with a belt. Fortunately, he turned to God, and his life dramatically improved. Another example is Tanya Myles, who was molested at age 7 by her brother’s best friend. She used drugs and attempted suicide three times, but eventually went to church and got into a good program. President George Bush heard about the program, and she got to meet him at the White House.

NBA player Stanley Roberts used drugs as a child and cocaine as an adult. He suffered a serious basketball injury and could no longer play. He says he was blessed with four children, millions of dollars, and a big house, but none of it was enough until he put God first in his life.

This dramatic and inspiring documentary is awarded our “Faith-Friendly” Seal for ages 12 and older. “Rock Bottom and Back” offers hope to those who have been tested and tried in life. Its theme is, “Never give up!”
