Young And Free

An ultra low budget family western about a young man against the wilderness, and his romance with a a Native American girl, this well meaning film is hobbled by poor script that is sometimes laughable and by amateurish acting. The weak plot, sometimes recalls The Blue Lagoon with the boy and girl setting up house in the woods. Although rated G, there are surprisingly sexual overtones in the second half with the couple entering a full blown (though not explicit) sexual relationship and the boy romping about in a leather loin cloth and whimsically referring to the girl (who doesn't speak English, and stays covered up throughout) as "Young Squaw Who Feels Good Under Blanket'. On the plus side, there is some lovely outdoor photography, and the two leads are quite easy on the eyes, especially Eric Larsen, who though no great shakes as an actor, had the kind of scrubbed Teen Idol good looks might have taken him far had he been in better movies.
