Bend it Like Beckham

David Beckham, star of England’s Manchester United team and hero of 18-year-old Jess, is known for his ability to bend the ball around the defense. Trapped between two worldviews in this comic drama, Jess (Parminder Nagra) is the daughter of Indian immigrant parents living in London. She is an excellent soccer player, but her parents forbid her to play because they believe it is wrong for a young woman to wear shorts in public. She is noticed by another great soccer player who gives her a chance to play on an organized team. She sneaks off to practices and games and, unknown to her parents, becomes the team’s star player. Her parents eventually discover the truth, leading to a serious clash of cultures.

Dove Review

“Bend it Like Beckham” is generally a clean film, but portrays Jess’s disobedience to her parents in a positive light and contains some profanity and homosexual undertones.
