Animated Hero: Harriet Tubman

Known as “the Moses of her people,” Harriet Tubman led 17 “underground railroad” missions and helped more than 300 slaves escape to freedom in the North. Her selflessness and disregard for personal safety, along with her deep faith in God, enabled her to help family members and many others escape the bondage of human slavery.

Dove Review

This thirty minute animated episode shows the story of Harriet Tubman, a black slave woman destined to become the Moses of the African American slave population. This episode does a nice job of showing the conditions slaves faced in a non-violent manner as well as explaining what the Underground Railroad was and how it functioned. This episode is recommended for children age twelve and over because it does deal repeatedly with whippings. The whippings are never shown but heard and while non-violent in nature but could still be scary and confusing for younger viewers. There is also several times when slave owners are chasing slaves with guns and dogs.
