David McNeil, an artist in high school, goes all out for the boy’s basketball team because his father was a star years ago on the team, and earned his letter and a championship jacket. David wants to do the same thing, although his father left home some time ago. David’s mother won’t talk about it and David doesn’t know what caused his father to depart. It’s the first time David has tried out for a sport and he pushes himself by running until he throws up.

David winds up becoming the manager for the team when he doesn’t make the final cut, and this leads to his meeting with Dribbles, the school custodian who is mildly retarded but big on team spirit and memories of the school’s past sports history. He also remembers the players, including David’s father Alex. When Dribbles is picked on by a bully, and a spot opens up for David on the team, he has some crucial decisions to make which will lead to his destiny. He meets a girl who helps him in his journey.

This film contains some mature themes including a teen girl’s pregnancy by a member of the basketball team, and a couple of characters being beaten up by a bully. There is some language but not over our level of acceptability. The film includes themes of perseverance and commitment so we are pleased to award our Dove “Family-Approved” Seal to this picture for ages twelve and above.
