Jonah Hex

Jonah Hex (Josh Brolin) is a scarred drifter and bounty hunter of last resort, a tough and stoic gunslinger who can track down anyone...and anything. Having survived death, Jonah's violent history is steeped in myth and legend, and has left him with one foot in the natural world and one on the "other side." His only human connection is with Lila (Megan Fox), whose life in a brothel has left her with scars of her own. Jonah's past is about to catch up with him when the U.S. military makes him an offer he can't refuse: in exchange for his freedom from the warrants on his head, he must track down and stop the dangerous terrorist Quentin Turnbull (John Malkovich).

Dove Review

This is the most unusual western I have ever seen. The main character, Jonah Hex (Josh Brolin), is seeking revenge against the man who killed his family by lighting their cabin on fire with the family still in it. He also put a hot brand to Jonah’s face, leaving him with an ugly scar for life. This villain, Quentin Turnbull (John Malkovich), is presumed to have died some time later in a hotel fire. When Jonah learns he is really still alive he is hired by the army (post Civil War) and President Grant to capture him. The unusual part comes when he finds a few corpses along the way and manages to bring them back to life long enough to give him the necessary clues he needs to capture Turnbull. Then, after sharing the information, the bodies turn back to dust or, at best, into very unattractive corpses. Add some rock music to several scenes and you have one very different western.

The story really needs some work but at least the lead actor, Brolin, makes you believe he is really out for vengeance. He nails the role and the motive of this man who has turned cold blooded from his loss and you really believe he wants to nail Turnbull with all his soul.

Unfortunately, the theme of vengeance, along with the scenes of a prostitute in addition to the violence level and strong language, prevent us from awarding this film our Dove Seal. Why not see “Toy Story 3” which opens this weekend? It is a great film and the toys do not bring corpses back to life!
