Make no mistake about it. This is a powerful and compelling DVD. It shows two dedicated Christians who travel to Haiti to record the events following the January 12, 2010 earthquake which reached a 7.0 and occurred sixteen miles from the capital city of Port-au-Prince.
The two previous installments in this series received our Dove “Family-Approved” Seal for ages twelve plus. The only thing which prevents this one from receiving the Dove Seal is the graphic images of corpses and body parts, some of them bloody, and the placing of these bodies and parts in a mass grave. It is not pleasant to view the legs and arms and half bodies which belonged to people who are now dead. In addition, a young man is shot in the head by police and although the shooting isn’t seen, the bloody results are.
It is inspiring to see many still worship and pray to God and the miraculous survival of a man who was buried in rubble for fifteen days moved me and would move almost any viewer. One woman also found in the rubble is asked if she thought she would survive and she replied, “Yes, why not?” Unfortunately, we see the realistic and grim moments in which people push and shove and fight each other. We hear the guns going off as local police threaten and actually shoot some of the people who are scavenging the rubble and the broken homes and businesses for food and materials with which to build temporary shelters.
The Christian faith message is unmistakably heard and seen in this DVD. As one host says, “We have seen the best and the worst here.” It is unfortunate that due to the graphic images which are a result of the devastation of the earthquake, we cannot award our Dove “Family-Approved” Seal to this DVD.
