Annie is a young, happy foster kid who’s also tough enough to make her way on the streets of New York in 2014. Originally left by her parents as a baby with the promise that they’d be back for her someday, it’s been a hard-knock life ever since with her mean foster mom Miss Hannigan. But everything’s about to change when the hard-nosed tycoon and New York mayoral candidate Will Stacks makes a thinly-veiled campaign move and takes her in.
Over the years there have been many different versions of “Annie.” Here is a more modern one that will entertain from beginning to end. In the big city of New York, Annie is looking for her parents to return while Mr. Stack wants to be mayor. Their worlds collide when Mr. Stack saves Annie from being hit by a van on the street.Jamie Foxx portrays Mr. Stack in a believable performance, as does the charming Quvenzhane Wallis as Annie. The music is also more modern and some new songs add a vibrant feel that we can all relate to in the film. This is a wonderful addition to the “Annie” musicals of the past. Although the film is entertaining for the entire family, we must caution that it contains some mild language. Due to this issue, we award “Annie” (2014) the Dove “Family-Approved” Seal for ages 12+.
