“Savior” does a nice job portraying the Nativity story in a modern setting. Joe and Mary, instead of Joseph and Mary, are engaged to be married. They have remained pure for their wedding night, so Joe is crestfallen and shocked when he learns that Mary is going to have a child. She explains that an angel appeared to her and told her this would happen. God helps Joe accept it.
This contemporary story takes place in England, and the Prime Minister declares a census will take place. Mary and Joe ride on Joe’s Moped! They can’t find an available hotel room when Mary is about to give birth. A nice man lets them use a travel trailer where Mary gives birth to her son and names him Jesus. Contemporary shepherds and wisemen visit them and the baby.
The artistic license works pretty well. It should be noted that the angels appear as shirtless men, and Mary and Joe have a frank but non-graphic conversation about not having had sex. We are pleased to award this contemporary Nativity story, which contains the main elements of Jesus’ birth, our Dove “Faith-Friendly” Seal for ages 12+. Enjoy it as you contemplate what Jesus’ birth would be like in today’s world!
