This documentary was originally a TV mini-series that looks at some of the most controversial stories in the Bible for the purpose of giving skeptics solid answers. It opens like a spy movie with the goal of uncovering mysteries, and the music is equally engaging. To top it off, Roger Moore is the host, and his classic British accent, reminiscent of 007, lends an air of authority to the pursuit.

Aside from the captivating visual reenactments and the enchanting voice-over, the makers of this investigative report have engaged numerous well-reputed scholars to speak to these issues. It is unfortunate that none of them appear in the credits, as they are esteemed professors of history and religion from highly recognized universities such as Pepperdine, Biola University, and Columbia, as well as other doctorates—by the likes of the astrophysicist Hugh Ross and the apologist Ken Samples—who run reputable institutions. Here they discuss evidence that can trace humankind back to Adam and Eve and substantiate Noah and the flood, Sodom and Gomorrah, Job, Abraham, Joseph, Moses, Samson, David, Paul, Pilate, and Jesus Himself.

This program focuses short segments on each of these legends and the phenomenon that surrounds them, most of the time having at least one outstanding bit of evidence to support the claims with archeological findings and historical data. They discuss how impressive it is that the Bible is accurate in its scientific statements. “In the beginning…” indeed supports the notion of the Big Bang. There are, in fact, very impressive moments, such as when it is stated that scientists have taken mitochondrial segments from a large sample of ethnicities, as well as tracing lineages through the Y chromosome to successfully determine that everyone has originated from one woman and one man thereby making the purposeful existence of Adam and Eve plausible.

Furthermore, scientists agree conclusively that the Colorado River would never have been able to carve the Grand Canyon. It is believed it would have taken a huge and rapid volume of water, which is consistent with the biblical story of the flood. It is also fascinating to know that billions of dead animals, including very large ones, are found to have been buried whole at this same time. Also, discussed are inscriptions about David and the Dead Sea Scrolls, among other pieces of evidence that are still being discovered. All these only support what we already believe to be true.

Most compelling is that none of these scholars could give way to the skeptics who claim there are contradictions and historical inaccuracies to be found in the Bible. On the contrary, all believers can stand firm in the knowledge that the Bible’s authority remains intact as a miraculous document that is supported by both ancient and recent findings.
