Dove Review

My Dog the Space Traveler is a modern-day story of a boy and his adventure within a space portal. This follows a trip into a space hole by his dog Blaze. Robbi Otto (Logan Borsari) is a typical boy—he has a great imagination and is smart, but he’s also picked on by a couple of bullies. He lives within the framework of a very dysfunctional family. His dad, Vernon (Chris Lemmon), constantly yells at him and his mom, Pearl (Tonja Walker), who sleeps a lot as she is depressed, having been out of work for some time. His older sister, Nora (Jordan Hosier), is a super-rude older sister that sees Robbi as an annoyance. They fight a lot.

Robbi loves to spend time at the lake where the portal is, but his dad is too busy drinking beer and yelling to listen to Robbi’s stories about it. And dad and mom argue a lot too. Still, Robbi persists that there is something going on down at the lake, and when a man named Clarence (Phillip Edward Van Lear) befriends Robbi, Clarence may be the very one to show Dad that his son isn’t imagining things.

The family begins to work closely and come together by the conclusion of the movie, when Clarence tells Pearl, “Your family’s in order now.” They find love is the most powerful force in the universe. Sadly, language is an issue throughout the film, including use by the daughter. In addition, disrespect is shown toward the parents by the kids on several occasions, with the daughter using strong language with the mother and the son actually tosses some pebbles in anger near his dad. The boy also tells his sister, “You’re a B!” And the parents begin to make out in one scene before the son interrupts them by knocking at the door. This isn’t a great example of a Dove approved movie, so please use caution.
