As one of Star Wars most beloved characters, it was only a matter of time before Han Solo got his own film. But with shoes as big as Harrison Ford’s to fill, everyone’s wondering if the new guy, Alden Ehrenreich, is up to the job. The charm, the wit, the debonair qualities—the order for Solo is tall.
Fortunately for Ehrenreich, he’s not alone. After finding himself surrounded by an outstanding cast, which includes Emilia Clarke, Donald Glover and Woody Harrelson, Ehrenreich proves he’s worthy of the role and rises handsomely to the occasion.
After barely escaping the shipbuilding slum of Corellia by way of enlisting into the Empire, young Han Solo (Ehrenreich) embarks on a mission to do whatever it takes in order to save the love of his life, Qi’ra (Clarke) whom he was forced to leave back home.
In order to achieve his goal, Solo uses every slick trick up his sleeve, which includes—and is not limited to—lie, cheat, steal, and band together with those who do likewise. From space-train robberies to spaceship racing along the “Kessel Run” in less than 20 parsecs, Solo proves to be a film which truly lands the audience, ultimately, back to Harrison Ford in episode IV, but now with some fun, new background.
The humor is on-point, the visuals are nothing short of stunning, and the story itself proves to be an incredibly fun ride. It’s a movie of origins, which means the audience can expect many beginnings. Is Han’s last name really “Solo”? How did Han meet Chewy? Was there ever a time when the Millennium Falcon was shiny and new? And speaking of the Flacon, how, exactly, did Han win her fair and square?
Dove’s Perspective:
Knowing that Solo flies onto the screen as one of the more highly anticipated films of the year (no doubt your kiddos are excited!), Dove seeks to make it clear that a lot of thought has gone into the following decision. Though there are a few moments of content which might make you shift in your seat, Dove has decided to Approve Solo with the 12+ seal in hopes that the following nuanced caveats will be taken into consideration. If you love Star Wars, you know already its heroic rebel Han Solo. He’s rough around the edges, he pushes envelopes, and as such, a film about his origins shares similar characteristics. Dove hopes that parents will engage in good dialogue with their kids after the film is over knowing that there will be lots of excited chatter over this new story now unfolding in that cherished galaxy far far away.
