Masterpiece, Season 1 is a fantastic game show based in England with an awesome premise—three different duos assess the value of historical pieces such as pottery, a Japanese sword, old boots, glassware etc., to see who comes closest to the real value price. Some of the pairs are husband and wife, and some are friends, collectors and antique enthusiasts. The goal of the game is to get to the Masterpiece Gallery, which is where they find out who chose the highest-valued treasure of the three teams, and the one pair that does wins 1,000 pounds (about $1,300 U.S.).
There are a lot of fascinating items to be found in the four episodes, including old divorce papers from Charlie Chaplain and an ancient tribal mask. Host Alan Titchmarsh is congenial and keeps the show moving at a good pace along with Rachel, his co-host. One of the more interesting aspects of the show features one of the pairs guessing if an automobile is older or newer than the previous one shown. If it is older, it is backed up by the driver, and if newer, it is driven forward. A lot of suspense plays a part in the dramatics and enjoyment of watching this wonderful series. And the viewer will not be able to refrain from guessing which of the various items is the most valuable.
The Dove Take
This show features some interesting items—some from hundreds of years in the past. It is a lot of fun to try to assess the value of the items along with the guests on the show. It is good, clean fun and we are most pleased to award it our Dove-Approved All Ages Seal. We find the “value” of this show to be pretty high—it’s educational and entertaining fun.
