Dove Review

This delightful series of episodes is about the fun of Halloween, and these cute and memorable characters focus on the fun! Spookley, the square pumpkin, is joined by unforgettable characters like Jack the scarecrow, who wears a bucket on his head. Also featured is Beacon, a bee, Mistletoe the cat, Bo Bo the lady pumpkin, and three spiders (stuffed animal-like, non-threatening and with colors of purple, pink and white) called … Edgar, Allan and Poe! These three spiders add comedy relief. Other characters round out the series including Jelly Bean, Lila, and Big Tom and Little Tom, the magician-pumpkins.

The show features non-scary characters, mostly animated, peppy music, and funny scenes which will result in several laugh-out-loud moments for the kids.

Coming from Holiday Hill Farm, the characters of this show focus on the clean fun of Halloween, including dressing up, magic tricks, and eating some tasty candy. In the first episode, Slim Pick-it and the Skeletones are scheduled to appear and provide music. But will they make it? Some of the fun includes a scene of magic, a floating pumpkin skit, in which the humorous response is, “How did they do that? Why did they do that?!” We also hear a great song, “The Transylvania Twist,” “not the Monster Mash” as it’s pointed out, with a lead vocalist that sounds like Boris Karloff. Halloween, candy, and Jack-o’-lanterns are the delights of this first show.

This creative and innovative series, created by Joe Troiano, continues in episode two, The Spookley Valentine Show, which focuses on the big February holiday. Jack the scarecrow shows the viewer how to make a big red heart valentine out of paper. And Bo Bo the pumpkin wants to do a duet with Spookley and they do so, a song about two different voices making a beautiful tune. In another comedic scene, Jack says that they have to keep the show moving, and he wants to find out who’s up next. It turns out that it’s his turn to perform!

Lila didn’t make cards for Jack or Spookley because she didn’t think they would like them as they would be small, like her. But they love her cards. And Lila sings about “big or small, tiny or tall…it’s the size of the love in my heart.” And Spookley sings about the rainbow and wanting to be someone’s sunshine.

In Episode three, The Spookley Easter Show, some of the characters are watching out for the Easter chicken!  An Easter pageant is planned, and Jack and Jelly Bean are making Easter eggs. And Jelly Bean sings a song about cheering up, and waking up happy. And the pumpkins, Big Tom and Little Tom, perform some magic. And Jelly Bean puts the best Easter eggs together to form one big egg. And an energetic song about spring finally being here is performed.

In episode four, The Spookley Summer Show, Edgar, Allan and Poe are deciding what to bring to the picnic, and they get confused about “smores.” Does it mean, “bring…some more?” The episode features comments about the games “Simon Says,” and “Tag.” And a great song is included, by Beacon, called “Be who you want to be.” A song about the weather getting hotter and summertime is timely. In another funny scene, as the credits roll, fireworks are erupting, and a character comments that the fireworks are blocking the credits!

Finally, we have an animated song, in the music video titled Halloween’s For Everyone!” The scarecrow dances, and the episode includes a song about the fact that something special is in the air, and it is lively and fun. “We love Halloween!” says the group of quirky and lovable characters. This series has earned our Dove seal for All Ages.
