The Synopsis:
Retired teacher Carol Kenney begins a second career as a doctor.
The Review:
Patricia Heaton is a 50-something divorcee who’s just begun her internship as an MD at Loyola Memorial Hospital. She’s teaming up with a few other young guns as we are invited to hang out with the comedic hospital staff in the new CBS sitcom Carol’s Second Act.
Dr. Carol Kenney is giddy about her new role, and her enthusiasm oozes out of every pore, which usually makes the rest of the staff roll their eyes. Most of the jokes are about Carol’s age and the writers did a good job trying to create light-hearted tension around the whole ageism thing. Thankfully, before the first episode ends, we see the turn of the conversation to an appreciation of Carol’s valuable wisdom from her experience (read: age) and the humor comes from a more diverse bag of tricks.
We’re happy to see some other good friends in the cast. Ashley Tisdale (High School Musical and lots of other work) is Carol’s successful and sassy daughter – and also the hospital’s pharmaceutical rep. Cedric Yarbrough (Speechless) is the seasoned and sarcastic Nurse Dennis who doles out his helpfulness on his terms. The chief resident is a hard-nosed Ito Aghayere (Blacklist, Logan Lucky) who keeps everyone shaking in their scrubs.
The sweet new show launched in September on CBS, episodes airing Thursdays, 9:30-10:00 PM (ET/PT) and is also available on Amazon Prime.
Heaton is a pro at these easy-to-love family sitcoms and we are more than grateful for something delightful and silly to watch amidst the current slate of nerve-wracking streaming selections. After viewing two episodes, Carol’s Second Act is Dove-approved for All Ages.
