Spies in Disguise, inspired by Lucas Martell’s animated short film- Pigeon: Impossible, is filled with energy, action, explosions, spies, and funny lines that kids and adults alike will enjoy.
Young Walter Beckett (voiced by Tom Holland) is working on a gadget that counts down from 60 seconds and then explodes as the movie opens. We soon learn he is a “whiz kid,” full of smarts and creative ideas. He takes apart his mom’s cell phone, which she actually needs since she is about to start her shift as a cop. She likes to help people and Walter’s goal is to do the same thing with his inventions. Later, when he is an adult, he works with an intelligence organization and admires top spy Lance Sterling (voiced by Will Smith). He is a James Bond type of figure, who always seems to come out on top and to save the world.
However, as one of the themes in this wildly imaginative movie showcases, everyone needs help, and Walter wants in the worst way to be a help to Lance with his many creations or, perhaps, it would be better put to say his “almost” creations. Walter tells Sterling he can make him invisible but Lance doesn’t think that will ever come in handy. Of course, only a short time after he says this to Walter he winds up on a case in which being invisible would actually come in handy!
There are some funny lines for the parents in the audience, with Lance walking away from Walter at one point, shaking his head, and muttering, “Millennials!” And of course, Lance has a difficult time saying Walter’s name right, even calling him “Wilbur” on a regular basis.
Lance’s adversary in the film is a spy who takes on his image but has a robotic hand with all sorts of power to help him wreak havoc. Walter does indeed become Lance’s helper and they will face all sorts of close calls in this action-packed and fast-paced spy movie. Walter even has to figure out the antidote to turn Lance back into himself after he is accidentally turned into a…pigeon!
The film contains some fantasy explosions and wild fights, all non-graphic, with a few uses of name-calling. Parents can judge for themselves by checking out our content listing, but we are awarding it our Dove-approved seal for All Ages.
