Dove Review

Mica and Mary enter Bibletown to learn and have fun. While there they meet Brook the owl who tells them stories from the Bible. The wise owl shares about most of the events that occur in the Book of Genesis in the order they are written. Mica and Mary seem eager to learn. Brook first teaches them how God created the earth and tells the story of Adam and Eve and about their sons, Cain and Abel. They also learn about Cain’s attack on his brother.

Next, Brook shares the stories of Noah and the flood, and the Tower of Babel. Mica and Mary then learn about the life of Abraham and how he was willing to sacrifice his son, Isaac, as an offering to God. Brook tells about Isaac’s wife Rebekah and their two sons Jacob and Esau. He talks about when Jacob is unwittingly blessed with God’s covenant after disguising himself as his brother in order to trick his father to give him Esau’s inheritance.

Mica and Mary next learn about Jacob’s two wives, Leah and Rachel, and their eleven sons and daughter. Brook shares the story about the youngest son, Joseph, who is Jacob’s favorite son. This causes his brothers to become jealous so they sell Joseph into slavery and tell Jacob that he is dead. Joseph earns a reputation as an interpreter of dreams and is summoned by Pharaoh of Egypt to interpret his dreams. Impressed with Joseph’s abilities, Pharaoh elects Joseph to be his highest official.

Joseph later encounters his brothers in Egypt and tests their good will. When they pass the test, Joseph reveals his identity and reunites with his father. Even though his brothers meant him harm, Joseph takes care of them after Jacob dies. Mica and Mary are glad the wise owl told them these stories and can’t wait to return the next day to Bibletown to learn more Bible stories.

Bible Friends focuses on stories from Scripture told by a wise owl. It helps viewers learn about the Bible along with Mica and Mary. Granted, the movie is mostly dialogue with little action which may be hard to follow for those with short attention spans. Also worth noting, there are several cutaways to imagery that doesn’t match the Bible story Brook is telling. Most of the images shown appear as filler and include crosses, an open Bible and landscapes instead of images relating to the events in Genesis. The movie focuses on biblical teaching throughout, but some of the stories include characters involved in violent situations and displaying poor behavior. For these reasons, it earns our Dove-approved for Ages 12+ award.

The Dove Take:

While this animated film’s Bible stories are for all ages to hear, some biblical characters’ violent and poor behavior make it better suited for audiences 12 and older.
