Dove Review

Three Australian siblings, Lewis, Nelson, and Clancy Schneider, are charged with the task of educating the world about wildlife in their country. Many of these animals live in the wildlife reserve that is their own backyard. Throughout the film, the Schneider brothers tell stories of animals they have rescued and discuss how to care for many different animals in instances where they cannot be released back into the wild. Viewers also learn many facts about kangaroos and other animals native to Australia, as well as facts about some animals that can be found around the world.

The idea behind Zoo Squad is to be family-friendly and present an educational topic from the perspective of children. The film, however, is homemade and presents information in a way that is repetitive and often confusing. For example, numerous animals are discussed more than once—on more than one occasion viewers are asked, “Did you know that a kangaroo is a marsupial?” It seems to be going in circles. The narrators also jump from animal to animal very quickly, making it confusing for viewers to keep up with the discussion at hand.

The audio sounds slightly muffled throughout the film—especially when the boys talk. It is clear that voiceover audio was added on top of other videos. For the voiceovers, the boys are evidently reading off of a script—viewers can even hear the breaths they take between words and sentences. The visuals, however, while clearly home-filmed, are steady and well done. The transitions between video clips are seamless. The producers of the film did a great job with meshing at-home filming and audio into one complete film.

Zoo Squad does a brilliant job illustrating God’s creation in nature and the intricate functions that keep these animals alive. It does so, however, without mentioning God once. On many occasions, references to “millions of years ago” are mentioned. This film can provide a great discussion point when teaching children about God’s creation, but it is important to emphasize the fact that all of it is created by God in Genesis 1. Parents are easily able to add Scripture when discussing this film with their children.

Overall, Zoo Squad is a family-friendly movie that is great for young children—especially those who are interested in animals.

The Dove Take:
