Hardworking Clare has a heartfelt dream to someday become a successful chef with her own restaurant, but there’s just one problem – her cooking. Dismayed after losing her sous chef job (again), Clare turns to her best friend, albeit a bit dramatically, for direction. Upon her friend’s suggestion, Clare attends counseling with a pastor who plants the seed for a new dream in Clare’s life. Little do they both know, Clare’s determination and desire to help others will have a greater impact than either could imagine.
In Coffee Kart, we watch as Clare struggles with having her dreams inflated and deflated, frequently. Her new passion, coffee, seems like it will be no different. When it comes down to it, all Clare’s ever wanted was to help people and make them feel special; certainly a noble cause. But for Clare, it seems like every attempt she makes to make something good is thwarted – I’m sure we can all relate to feeling like we’re our own worst enemy sometimes. But Clare demonstrates true integrity and determination, honing her skills, putting in hard work, and affording a lot of laughable moments along the way to achieve her dreams. As Clare, and the viewer will soon find out, your dreams don’t always end up being what you planned once they’re realized. Sometimes God has a better idea or plan than what we can even think of, and although the journey there may be frustrating, it’s worth it.
This film has a great little message, and what it lacks in big production value, it makes up for with squeaky clean content, a solid plot, and a happy ending. Although I’d rather Coffee Kart had a bit more faith content, it’s refreshing to see a faith-based film that isn’t about romance or controversy but focuses on something a little more simple – a girl and her coffee.
Coffee Kart is a safe bet for a family movie night with loads of jumping-off points for conversations about asking God for direction, dreams and aspirations, hard work, determination, attitude, community service and more.
