No matter how difficult our circumstances, there is always hope when you have faith in God. This is the message Andrew (LeMarc Johnson) is told by people in his life when he loses his job which leads to his already rocky marriage crumbling. Soon he finds himself kicked out of his own house and possibly losing custody of his daughter. To make matters worse, his wife, Tina (Timeca Seretti), is involved in a romantic relationship with his friend, Derrick (Carlos Sepulveda)—which has been secretly going on for months.
Completely deflated, Andrew turns to alcohol to drown out his troubles. Yet the people in his life continue to point him to God. One such person is Andrew’s grandma (Debra Jackson), who reminds him of the biblical story of Job. She tells him “trials and suffering bring spiritual enlightenment and build a relationship between us and God.” She encourages him to go to church and do some soul-searching. Additionally, she offers for him to stay at her beach house with the agreement that he will go to church. Andrew starts attending church and eventually takes responsibility for his problems, asking the Lord for forgiveness. Thereafter, his life begins to change for the better.
Hope is a story about trusting in God no matter the struggles that come our way. There are many faith elements included in the movie. Besides the spiritual advice Andrew’s grandma gives him, others encourage him to have faith in God and believe in His love. Andrew reads Romans 8:28 from his grandma’s Bible and that Sunday in church he publicly confesses his sins and asks for God’s forgiveness. We witness Andrew’s spiritual journey throughout the film.
Even though this movie has a positive spiritual message, several cautionary elements make it not suitable for children which include violence, mild language, heavy drinking, revealing clothing, divorce and infidelity. Therefore, we are awarding our Dove Seal for the film’s faith elements, but recommend it for ages eighteen and above.
