Dove Review

Jimmy Paul the Pug Tooth Fairy by Beth Roose tells a very short story about a dog named Sarge, who loses his second to last tooth, and puts it under his pillow for Jimmy Paul. Sarge’s dog friends, Giles and Rascal, stay awake all night to try and catch a glimpse of Jimmy Paul the Pug Tooth Fairy. When they do eventually see him, Jimmy Paul quickly puts Giles and Rascal into a magical slumber and flies away.

While this book is good for young children, it leaves little to no explanation for much of the story. My initial question being, “Why is the Pug Tooth Fairy named Jimmy Paul?” There is no background on any of the characters and the verbiage is often repetitive. Roose refers to both pieces of furniture mentioned in the story in the same way: “the big, red chair” and “the big, yellow sofa.” The story is so short that it lacks many important details and could benefit from a bit of elaboration. The illustrations in the book are well done. They are colorful and attention grabbing—just the way that they should be for a young child. It is grammatically well written, and it features short, one- to two-sentence paragraphs placed on different parts of the page in order to make reading easier for those who are just learning.

Roose’s story is one that advocates for a great cause—Lone Star Bulldog Club Rescue. The acknowledgements page is dedicated to providing information about the rescue and how it helps abandoned bulldogs find permanent home. Jimmy Paul the Pug Tooth Fairy is a cute children’s book with great intentions—to be entertaining for kids and to raise awareness about an important organization.

Jimmy Paul the Pug Tooth Fairy is Dove-approved for all ages.

The Dove Take:

Jimmy Paul the Pug Tooth Fairy is a short children’s book great for kids interested in fairytales, stories about dogs, and the idea of the tooth fairy.
