Dove Review

Over the past few decades the ethicality of abortion has become a prominent religious and political question. Divided Hearts of America seeks to answer this question using legal and upright reasoning. Throughout the documentary, individuals are interviewed in order to support the idea that abortion is inherently wrong.

As the film develops, viewers hear from multiple people who have personal stories relating to abortion—some who have had abortions, some who were almost aborted, and some who have performed abortions. As a whole, all of these stories are very important to painting abortion in a negative light. With that being said, some of the interviews seem out of place. For example, in the very beginning of the film, abortion is regarded as a racist ideal—whether or not this is true is not the point of the movie and does not serve its purpose.

In contrast, some of the interviews provide very graphic stories that are difficult to listen to. Towards the end of the film, when a former abortion doctor goes into gruesome detail about abortion in each stage of pregnancy, viewers are shown basic graphics to go along with a heartbreaking narration. Because of this, viewers should be aware of sensitivities before watching this film.

The creators of Divided Hearts of America did a wonderful job of finding individuals to furnish the film. The movie is well organized with facts and stories that not only support their findings, but also illustrate them in everyday life. The addition of news clips from all political angles was a nice touch to showcase differing opinions of those from every corner of America.

Divided Hearts of America is put together seamlessly—the graphics are well done as are the transitions from scenery to interviews. The audio is clear and easy to understand. Difficult terms are defined, and it seems that all information comes from primary sources.

When considering a pregnancy, there are many routes to take. While this film is rated for ages 18+ for graphic descriptions, Divided Hearts of America could play a key role in the future of sexual education. It is important for expecting mothers to be armed with every angle of the truth before making any decisions, regardless of how difficult that truth may be to hear or see. Divided Hearts of America is an excellent film that shows real life stories regarding abortion and is one that should be shown any individual in need of education on the topic.

Divided Hearts of America is Dove-approved for Ages 18+.
