After a horrific car accident that takes their vehicle off of a bridge and into the water below, three teenagers’ lives are altered forever. Angie feels immensely grateful that her life has been spared, so, without telling anyone, she sets off on a journey to become a superhero, fulfilling her one goal of changing the world. Andre and Sarah, the other two teens, are healing both physically and emotionally in the aftermath of the accident and Angie’s mysterious disappearance.
With the whole town looking for her, Angie first decides to go and visit the father she hasn’t seen in quite some time. She, rather forcefully, suggests that he needs to make some changes in his life and that she can help him. Back home, Sarah’s mother makes it very clear that she does not like Andre, to which he responds respectfully. Danni, the one witness of the crash, struggles in his personal life, but ultimately decides to do the right thing.
My True Fairytale has a number of storylines unfolding at the same time. Viewers see Angie with her father, Sarah and Andre in their grief and healing, Angie’s family as they search for her, and Danni as he tries to make sense of what he saw. Each storyline is interesting but, while they do tie in together at the end, the separation throughout the movie makes it hard to know exactly what is happening. Viewers must pay close attention, or the entire story will be difficult to understand.
With great acting and steady, clear footage, My True Fairytale is well made. In some instances, however, the script seems unnecessarily dramatic or difficult to follow, but it does stay consistent. For example, Angie calls everyone by their first name, making it confusing at first when she shows up at a random man’s house. The idea of her setting out to become a superhero and change the world is admirable, but it seems odd that her first endeavor is to help her father with his wardrobe. These aren’t necessarily bad things, just interesting plot points that make the story unique. The film shows unwavering loyalty among characters and displays changes of heart in even the toughest parents. Overall, the film is touching, showing viewers the impact that honesty, integrity, and determination can have on the lives of a single person and those around them.
My True Fairytale is Dove approved for all ages.
