Three profanities in the heat of battle; five or six obscenities and several minor expletives; use of the N-word referring to blacks, but the film is very much about the wrongness of slavery, and the importance of freedom and equality; sexuality in one scene and one implied sexual situation, but no nudity; much wartime battling, with graphic wounds and in one scene the removing of an infected arm; some drinking; a woman breast feeds her baby, exposing the breast briefly. Although the film is extremely well made, focusing on the character of the people of the time, and a sober reminder of the conflict that nearly destroyed our country, we are unable to recommend it for family viewing due to the misuse of God’s name and the intensity of the fighting scenes.
