At age 21, John Denver (Chad Lowe) dropped out of college and moved to Los Angeles to pursue his dream of becoming a singer/songwriter, much against the wishes of his father, Dutch (Gerald McRaney), a career Air Force pilot. But Denver knew what he wanted and was soon singing in local clubs and on college campuses.
Denver met Annie (Kristin Davis), his first wife and the woman for whom he would write the lyrical “Annie’s Song,” at a college concert and pursued her until she finally agreed to marry him. Although they loved each other very much, John and Annie had very different visions of family life and his years on the road as one of the most successful singers in the world, took a huge toll on their marriage. John was also plagued by his troubled relationship with his father, who had difficulty supporting his son’s career choice.
