Dove Review

The Follower is a journey of a wayward soul, Elisha (Michael Sigler) searching for answers in the midst of his confusion and heartache. It presents a straightforward gospel message, in an often campy and at times comical way through quirky characters that preach at the protagonist throughout, until he surrenders in a prayer of salvation.

As Elisha heads out on a drive to receive some bad news, he encounters a mysterious, mildly obnoxious stranger, but self-sacrificing character, Elijah (Timothy E. Goodwin), who, against Elisha’s wishes, becomes his sidekick on the trip, creating chaotic situations that serve to frustrate Elisha and facilitate his transformation. This relationship mirrors the biblical characters by the same names as the prophet of old uses unconventional means to train his student. This present day Elijah appears to be the least qualified, but like the overall gospel message that is professed herein numerous times, God qualifies this Elijah in order to lead Elisha to a place of freedom.

There are a couple of moving moments when Elisha is forced to look back at the source of his deepest wounds and reconcile them with his present situation. He finally recognizes the sovereign wisdom of God in all circumstances, and finds peace with the sources of frustration in his life (including Elisha) and true communion with the father. This film also seeks to highlight and model the difference between attending church and professing Christ in a nominal fashion versus seeking personal growth by walking closely with Him.
