X-Men – Edited

Based on the Marvel comic books and TV cartoons, the super heroes known as X-men come to life in this action adventure film. Gifted by genetic mutations with special powers, these "mutants" fall into two camps. Professor Charles Xavier [Patrick Stewart], a powerful telepath, heads a private school for gifted young men and women who fall outside society norms. He also trains them to use their special powers to help and protect normal humans. A few become the team known as X-men. Cyclops [James Marsden] emits laser-like blasts from his eyes; Storm [Halle Berry] controls weather elements like wind and lightning; Jean Grey [Famke Janssen] moves things with her mind. Erid Lensherr [Iam McKellan], a survivor of the Holocaust, is also the powerful mutant, Magneto, who controls anything metal. He sees normal humans as a threat that should be controlled or destroyed because they fear mutant powers. He's joined by Mystique, a woman who transforms to any identity; Sabretooth [Tyler Mane] whose size and strength are prehistoric; and Toad [Ray Park] whose jumping and tongue mimic his namesake. The X-men are joined by Wolverine [Hugh Jackman], a loner with metal-laced bones and deadly metal claws that emerge for battle. Rogue [ Anna Paquin], whose touch transfers life force and mutant powers to herself, becomes a pawn in Magneto's plan to force world-wide acceptant of mutant. Dove Review

There are many themes developed in this film: good vs. evil, domination by force, racism [mutants are shunned], and corrupting power. Young children won’t grasp the themes I’ve mentioned, but they will quickly catch on to the “good guys and the bad guys”. I would advise parents to monitor very young children watching this, because there is still quite an amount of violence. However, that’s what comic books are all about. Professor X favors education and helping humans, Magneto believes only power and control are needed. These two opposed views provide for nearly all the action and dialogue of the movie. While I’d never watch this movie’s original PG-13 version, I will recommend parents viewing this edited version with their children, and even pausing long enough to have a discussion about the themes I’ve already articulated: good vs. evil, racism and it’s affects on society, the utter brutality of force and violence. In this way, there is definite redeeming value to the film and an “aha” opportunity for parents.
