K-Pax – Edited

Who is this man known only as Prot [Kevin Spacey]? Highly respected psychiatrist Dr. Mark Powell [Jeff Bridges] asks himself this question when Prot becomes his patient at a New York City psychiatric hospital. Prot claims to be from the plant K-Pax, where residents can travel from planet to planet faster than the speed of light, there are no families, and reproducing is painful and unpleasant. Dr. Powell, unable to solve the puzzle or diagnose his brilliant patient's mental status, calls in astrophysicists. They are astounded by Prot's knowledge of astronomy. Meanwhile, Prot bonds with other patients and promises to take one of them with him, when he returns to K-Pax. He generates an essay-writing contest among those anxious to be chosen. Dr. Powell and his colleagues all become fascinated with this extraterrestrial patient.

Dove Review

This video is definitely not for young viewers, as the themes are too complex. Science fiction buffs will enjoy it. I found the reaction of the doctors and scientists to Prot one of the most interesting aspects about this video. He didn’t fit into their pegs of diagnosis, and he had no response to the powerful drugs they were pumping into his body. In spite of it all, Prot connected in real ways to the patients in his ward. He listenened with love, and gave many of them hope for the first time in their lives. Prot continued to reach out to people, and in the end, he affected peoples lives in many ways. Dr. Powell examined his relationship with his wife and young children: he had a grown son with whom he had no relationship. This is good entertainment, particularly if you’re a sci-fi buff. Enjoy.
