Changing Lanes – Edited

Gavin Banneck [Ben Affleck], a junior partner in a high-priced New York law firm rushes to the court to file probate papers. Doyle Gibson [Samuel L. Jackson] rushes from a meeting of Alcoholics Anonymous to the court hearing to hopefully share custody of his sons. A sudden lane change throws the two men together in an accident that leaves Doyle without the use of his car. Doyle wants to do the right thing and exchange information, but Gavin offers him a blank check and drives away, forgetting a dropped file. Doyle arrives late for his court hearing and he looses custody of his sons. Gavin is also in a fix, because the forgotten file is vital to his case. Anger drives both of these men and the events escalate as each man goes to a higher level of rage. All of these events occur in one day: Good Friday. The men are from different social strata, but have similar ideals regarding moral behavior. The story unfolds as each deals with their anger.

Dove Review

This edited version is definitely a good moral tale that’s well told to a viewing audience of teens and adults. I was drawn into the film and realized the clay feet we all have, when put into sudden dilemmas not on our radar screen at dawn. Watching these men sink to lower levels of hatred and retribution and the effect on their lives is gut wrenching. When Doyle, after losing custody of his sons and a new member of Alcoholics Anonymous, sits in a bar, and stares into a shot glass of bourbon, I think you’ll find yourself, as I did, thinking: “Don’t drink it!” Gavin has the rose colored glasses removed regarding the true agenda at his firm. Doyle and Gavin each ultimately hit their moral bottom and the ending of this fine drama will place a smile on your face.
