Cowboy Up – Edited

The Brayton brothers, Hank [Keifer Sutherland] and Ely, were brought up in the bronco riding business. Their parent's divorced when the boys were young, but his influence resonates in their lives. Through flashbacks, we get many glimpses of the shaping of the boys personalities and character. Hank, the pragmatic, keeps his feelings closed, while Ely is the adventurer and risk taker. Ely is thrown from a bull in an early scene, and is told: "Never ride again". Those words are more of a challenge than a directive to him. Hank's love for a young woman [Darryl Hannah] is unrequited. Ely ends up capturing her heart, after his girl friend [Molly Ringwald] breaks up with him. Mrs. Brayton's constant concern for her boys, particularly Ely, is a good counterpoint to the risk-taking adventurer portrayed in the boy's father.

Dove Review

Hank and Ely are typical brothers: it’s almost a love/hate relationship, with feelings running deep and holding many memories of being with their father, and learning about roping huge bronco cows and to handle guns. Hank is more like his mother: pragmatic and unemotional, while Ely seems to mirror the father he hasn’t seen in many years. Throughout the many competitions of bronco riding, with Hank dressed as a clown as a foil for the bull, the boys stick together, even when they disagree. These men realize how much they really need one another, in spite of their divergent personalities. This video is good viewing for teenagers and young adults. I didn’t care for the loose morals portrayed in Daryl Hannah’s character. However, it wasn’t “over the top”, and could spark some interesting dialogue with young viewers. Definitely a video for viewers 12 years and older
