Elizabeth – Edited

When we first meet her, Elizabeth is a carefree, innocent girl twirling about in a romantic rendezvous with her male friend, Lord Robert Dudley. Elizabeth continues this relationship after ascending to the throne of England. Her councilors insist she must marry either King Philip II of Spain of the Duc d' Enjou, the son of the evil Mary of Guise, in order to strengthen England's state of affairs in Europe. Elizabeth becomes the queen-in-fact, after learning that Lord Robert is married and that there were assassins and traitors plotting against her throne. Who can she trust? Perhaps the patronizing Sir William Cecil. She can no longer trust the whining Lord Robert, who continues to lurk around the palace.

Dove Review

Cate Blanchett is Queen Elizabeth. Watching her morph from the twirling young girl in the opening scenes, to the intelligent, strong-willed, committed virgin-queen, is fascinating viewing. The men constantly around her vary from manipulative to sincere and at times, downright vacuous. The conspiracies and subplots are layered with credibility. I’m certain that liberties have been taken historically, but the facts are there: Elizabeth was a virgin queen who ruled long enough to see England rise into a powerful state that would be remembered historically as a golden age. I again caution that this is not to be seen by young children, but thanks to this edited version, it is wonderful viewing for the family and young adults.
