Beautiful Mind, A – Edited

John Nash, Nobel Laureate Mathematician from Princeton University, is portrayed in this wonderful movie about a man who, while being a certified genius, also suffered from schizophrenia. The time period spans over 40 years, and watching John Nash [Russell Crowe] interact with his real and imaginary world is almost gut-wrenching at times. His wife remains with him, after learning her husband was not involved in secret government work, but was actually living out a total imaginary existence, while at the same time going about his daily teaching assignments at the university.

Dove Review

I remember being mesmerized while viewing “A Beautiful Mind”, when it was released a few years ago. There is nothing removed from the edited version that would hinder a person from being pulled into the story. Knowing it’s a true story, and that John Nash “still lives and walks the campus of Princeton University daily”, kept me totally absorbed once again. This story can serve as a vehicle to help people in their understanding of mental illness, and its effects on the patient and their families. My heart empathized with his wife, as she cared for a very sick man with great love: a man who was her husband, but who was not there with her nor for her. John Nash’s schizophrenia was treated with drugs and treatments that have morphed over 40 years: Lithium, and electro-shock treatments. In the end, John came to realize that love is the truth and the only thing that binds people together, and not theorems and equations. This is an adult movie and highly recommended.
