Dove Review

I’m not a great fan of science fiction unless it’s exceptionally well done. This isn’t well done: it’s much too long and the story line is pure fantasy with strands of “The Velveteen Rabbit,” “Pinocchio” and “ET.” Very young children might be frightened by seeing the depictions of the robotic people roaming around the dump, frantically searching for their needed body parts. The boy, David, is sensitively portrayed, but it’s always made abundantly clear that David isn’t human, and that’s his one desire: to reconnect with the mother who abandoned him when she perceived him being a threat to her real son. This all takes place in a “brave new world”, where mecans, ie, robotic people, are very run-of-the-mill and are used for all sorts of tasks by humans. If science fiction is your forte, you’ll probably enjoy this film.
