Dove Review

Vivandière follows, well, vivandières — two young female nurses who sacrifice all comforts, even a salary, to care for wounded soldiers on the Civil War battlefield. These ladies will never be considered part of the regiment, never able to climb rank, but they will always remember who they chose to be in the face of danger.

The storyline features two vivandières who follow the call to serve after their brothers enter the war, both girls determined to keep their siblings safe. But, when the true nature of war threatens not only their brothers’ lives, but their determination to choose justice over North-versus-South prejudice, viewers witness gut, grit, and true selflessness.

This film, though heroic, contains heavy cursing and intense, bloody battle scenes. A few characters, including a Confederate preacher, manipulate Scripture, either instilling fear or justifying injustice, and due to these negative elements, Vivandière is Not Dove-approved.

The Dove Take

Vivandière offers a new plotline on the Civil War battlefield, featuring female nurses who abandon all comforts of home to take care of wounded soldiers—but heavy violence and offensive language are prominent.
