Dove Review

This Roy Rogers Show episode is a fun watch, filled with action and a bit of mystery. And it features Roy’s sidekicks, his wife Dale Evans, his friend Pat, his horse Trigger, and his trusty dog, Bullet.

As Roy says at the beginning of the episode, “Well, riders, Trigger is raring to go so let’s get started with today’s story.” It begins with Pat’s clothes coming up missing. And then Roy finds a state prison uniform cast-off. Roy hits the trail to find the convict or, in this case, four convicts. But why have they come to Roy’s town? It’s later stated they were seen near Willow Creek. Roy is soon pursuing the desperados and exchanges gunfire with them while he rides his loyal horse, Trigger.

Dale wonders if the four prisoners have entered their town’s territory for guns and money, but it seems they also have a score to settle. Trusty Bullet attacks one of the convicts, and is shot by him, but he is only injured. We don’t see him hit —  we just hear his whine from being struck from the bullet.

The action continues with Roy fist fighting not just one, but two of the bad guys. The episode manages to capture some humor along with the pursuit of the desperate criminals. Pat likes to ride his jeep which he calls “Nellybelle.” When he offers a ride to Dale, the jeep begins to shake and she says she doesn’t think the jeep likes her! In another humorous scene, Pat wonders why his shooting isn’t effective against the bad guys until he looks at his bullet box and learns he used flash powder blanks in his gun!

The threat of the bandit’s violence continues as Dale holds a gun on two of them in the diner, but then one gets the draw on her and she has to give up her gun. But eventually Pat and Roy round up a couple of the convicts, and now only two remain to be captured. The plot begins to unfold as we learn of Thatcher, a man in town who raced away from the threat when it was learned of the convicts’ appearance near town. Does Thatcher play a part in this mystery? Dale plays a part in helping Roy out as they attempt to capture the last two prisoners. Rest assured everything turns out okay and Roy and Dale sing “Happy Trails to You” as the episode’s credits run.

This episode is pretty wholesome, with a brief scene of a man smoking a cigarette, and with shootings that are not graphic. Due to its wonderful theme of justice and protecting the innocent, it has earned our Dove seal for All Ages.
