It’s no secret that pit bulldogs have a bad reputation. Often, they are bred as professional fighting dogs, which prompts overly aggressive behavior. Regardless, 12-year-old Amber, an animal lover and volunteer at the local Bark-about-it shelter, notices that pit bull puppy Shadow is never adopted. Too many people are afraid Shadow will grow up to be a vicious killer.
However, after lots of research for a school paper, Amber discovers that pit bulls aren’t aggressive by nature, but rather, all dog breeds’ attitudes directly reflect the nature of their owners. After adopting Shadow herself, Amber is dismayed when local authorities show up at her door to tell her that pit bulls are banned in her county—meaning Shadow can’t stay.
Amber takes this ordinance to court, fighting for not only Shadow, but for all pit bulls to have a fair chance at finding a loving home and having their loyal, gentle nature’s reputation restored.
Amber and her friend are your typical middle school girls. They have their share of minor snipping and snapping moments with parents, but no inappropriate or vile language is used. The girls also learn a humble lesson about social media… when in doubt, don’t post. Meanwhile, Amber’s parents have a somewhat unbalanced relationship that doesn’t always reflect a healthy partnership, but they come together as a family, as a community, to support Amber and Shadow. These positive elements of friendship, bravery, and standing up for what’s right earn Baby Bulldog Dove approval for All Ages.
The Dove Take
Twelve-year-old Amber represents her pit bull puppy in court to prove to the community that animals of all breeds reflect the nature of their owners, giving pits the chance to showcase their kind, loyal nature.
