“Beowulf and Grendel” is a very different and dark movie that takes place in Northern Europe. It is full of anger, fighting and an overall dreary feeling. Much of the fighting is bloody and one of the opening scenes shows a man being hit with arrows and then set on fire. Another aspect of the movie is the relationships that a witch has with both Beowulf and Grendel. She protects the troll because she had his baby while at the same time, she sleeps with the warrior who is trying to kill him.
As far as quality, the scenery, costumes and actors are pretty good, but it seems as if some key is missing. Had I read the epic poem, “Beowulf”, on which this movie is based, maybe it would have been more intriguing. As far as content goes, the amount of violence and the couple sleeping together does not allow this to be approved by Dove as a family-friendly-movie.
