Animated Hero: Maccabees

In Jerusalem the temple was the Holy Place, a place that King David’s son built for worship. The enemy of the Jews destroyed this temple, and the Greeks began to attack and ruin the sacred treasures previously used in temple ceremonies. King Antiochus, a Syrian-Greek king, challenges the children of Israel: worship the Greek gods or die! Some submit, but not the Maccabees—a small group that holds steady to the faith of their fathers. The spirit and determination of the Maccabees still lives today in the celebration of Hanukkah, The Feast of Lights.

This story gives some historical background. The Jews build a temple so that they can worship God. The Greeks come along and destroy it. And they take over the town. They are trying to capture all the Jews so that they cannot worship anymore.

The Jews get together and defeat the Greeks and rebuild the temple of God. This is a great learning movie and it’s great for younger viewers. It reminds viewers that they don’t have to be ashamed to love God.
