Moondance Alexander

This is the story of a girl picking up the pieces and finding her place in her small town and the world beyond it. Age 15 going on 20, Moondance had to grow up fast when her father died a few years ago. And because of her independent nature, she has a hard time making friends and finds herself tormented by two snobby, rich classmates, Fiona and Megan. Moondance spends her free time running deliveries for Mr. McClancy at the local general store. Fate intervenes one day as she rides her bike and has a chance encounter with an escaped black-and-white pinto she names Checkers. She and her mother track down the horse's owner Dante. Checkers is returned to Dante's small barn on the outskirts of town. Tumbleweed Stables and Moondance strike a deal with the veteran rider to work the stables in exchange for riding lessons on Checkers. As the two form a bond, tragedy threatens to strike again in the young girl's life while Dante trains her and the underdog Checkers for the county horse show competition with Fiona and Megan.

Dove Review

Coming-of-age movies many times deal with the problems of young teens. This movie fits that category. Moondance is a young girl who has lost her father, has a mother who is over-protective and classmates that are snobs. Through all this the only person she feels she can talk to is her father at the cemetery. Then by accident a horse comes into her life that will change her life forever.

Inspired by a true story, “Moondance Alexander” is fantastic entertainment for the entire family. It’s a truly delightful movie.
