DISC 1, Episodes 1-7

“The Flying Nun” – Sister Bertrille, Sally Field, arrives at the Convent San Tanco to be a kindergarten teacher. Shortly after arriving, the wind gusts lift her in the air and she discovers she can fly, much to the alarm of the other nuns.

“The Convert” – Carlos Ramirez believes he is having a “religious experience” when he sees Sister Bertrille flying and thinks it is a sign from heaven to change his ways.

“Old Cars for New” – Convent San Tanco is in desperate need of a new vehicle. So Sister Bertrille goes to get a new station wagon for the convent and runs into a shady salesman.

“A Bell for San Tanco” – Sister Bertrille approaches Carlos Ramirez to see if he will go skin diving and look for the bell that San Tanco ordered over 200 years ago and was lost at sea.

“The Fatal Hibiscus” – When one of the sisters overhears part of a private conversation, she gets the impression Sister Bertrille is dying. The other nuns take it upon themselves to make her last days bright and cheerful.

“Flight of a Dodo Bird” – When Sister Bertrille gets an ear infection, the doctor is called in. But he’s more concerned with Mother Superior and feels she needs psychological help.

“Polly Wants a Crack in the Head” – Sister Bertrille and Sister Jaqueline acquire a parrot with a big mouth and, since pets are not allowed, they try to hide the chatterbox bird in the convent.

DISC 2, Episodes 8-15

“Ah Love, Could You and I Conspire” – A hit man’s girlfriend stows away in the back of the convent’s station wagon and, once they discover her there, she poses as Mother Superior’s secretary.

“Days of Nuns and Roses” – To raise money for the convent, Sis. Bertrille and the others get an idea to make sea grape juice, bottle it and sell it with the label Nectar of San Tanco. But, things don’t work out quite as planned.

“With Love from Irving” – Sis. Bertrille comes to the aide of a slightly injured pelican and ends up having to cope with a lovesick bird.

“It’s an Ill Wind” – When mother Superior leaves on a business trip, she forgets the documents she needs for her meeting. Sis. Bertrille, being ever vigilant, decides to take them to her. But, because the wind dies down too quickly, she lands on an island where some gamblers are staying (smoking cigarettes and cigars in this episode).

“A Young Man with a Cornet” – When she and Sis. Jaqueline volunteer at a hospital, Sis. Bertrille becomes friends with a boy who has quite an imagination and tells all kinds of lies. When he witnesses Sis. Bertrille taking an unscheduled flight no one believes him.

“The Patron of Santa Thomasina” – Sis. Bertrille and Sis. Jaqueline try to get the villagers of Santa Thomasina to stop fighting. With some unusual tactics on the part of Sis. Bertille, the villagers see the error of their ways.

“If You Want to Fly, Keep your Cornet Dry” – When they find themselves lost on a trip with the children, Sis. Bertrille decides to fly to a pay phone to get help while Sis. Sixto stays with the kids. It starts to storm and Sis. Bertrille finds herself sopping wet and grounded, leaving Mother Superior and the other nuns worried about their whereabouts.

“The Dig In” – Sis. Bertrille gets trapped in a mine cave in with a very pessimistic man. She makes one suggestion after another only to be shot down by this Bill Watkins. When she tells him about her ability to fly he, naturally, thinks her crazy.

Disc 3, Episodes 16-23

“Wailing in a Winter Wonderland” – It’s Christmastime in San Juan and an elderly nun from Norway is at the convent, very ill. Her one wish is for a white Christmas. And when Sis. Bertrille tries to make that happen, everything goes haywire.

“With a Friend Like Him” – Bro. Paul is the only available qualified librarian and he is sent to help Convent San Tanco get their library back in order. But Bro. Paul is one of the most bumbling, accident prone librarians ever. So, needless to say, things don’t go just as planned.

“Tonio’s Mother” – When a young boy sees Sis. Bertrille come out of the sky, he is convinced it is his mother, returning from heaven.

“A Fish Story” – Sis. Sixto’s Uncle Gus is having trouble making ends meet when larger fishing organizations are squeezing out the little fishermen. Sis. Bertrille is coaxed into flying over the ocean and being his fish spotter. It works for a while but Uncle Gus needs convincing that he needs to find another line of work.

“The Hot Spell” – When a notorious gangster vows to take over Carlos’ establishment, Carlos deeds the casino to the convent, on paper only. Sis. Bertrille is told to go to the casino and, when she gets there, outwits the poker playing bad guy.

“My Sister, the Sister” – Sis. Bertrille’s sister, Dr. Jennifer Ethrington, comes to San Juan on her way to Brazil. Carlos meets her while on the plane and asks her out. When Sis Bertrille finds out, she drops in, uninvited.

“Sister Lucky” – While collecting money for he poor, Sis. Bertrille goes to the dock and happens on a gambler’s game of dice. When one of the men, who was on a losing streak, begins winning while Sis. Bertrille is there, he dubs her “Sister Lucky.” When Sis. Bertrille returns to the convent and shows Rev. Mother all the money, she is told to take every bit of the money back.

“The Sister and the Old Salt” – Captain Otis Barnaby is the epitome of an old time sailor, and the tales he tells the nuns and the children couldn’t prove otherwise. However, the “captain” isn’t really a seagoing man but it has been a dream of his his whole life. He plans on sailing his small sailboat from San Juan all the way to Miami and he has no hands-on experience.

Disc 4, Episodes 24-30

“Cyrano de Bertrille” – Pedro Alvarez and Juan Cortez are business partners but Pedro cannot read nor write. When he gets a letter from his girlfriend in Miami, he cannot read it. Sis. Bertrillle convinces him to learn how before his girlfriend’s visit He shows up in her classroom! It’s rough going but he does learn.

“The Conversion of Sister Shapiro” – When Carlos’ “adopted’ niece comes for a visit, he is unexpectedly pulled away on business. Sis. Bertrille, ever helpful, offers to keep the little girl at the convent. When she sees Sis Bertrille fly, she wants to be “just like Sis Bertrille” and commits to a life as a convent nun. Sis. Bertrille shows some home movies (Gidget) of when she was younger and some of the things she wanted to be before becoming a nun and changes the mind of young ‘Sis. Shapiro’.

“Where There’s a Will” – The Convent San Tanco becomes sole heir to the estate of a benefactor only to discover the only asset is the contract of a boxer. Which, in itself, could have been a good thing. However, the boxer hates fighting!!! When he overhears the nuns talking about his contract he runs off and, of course, Sis. Bertrille flies off to find him.

“The Puce Albert” – Carlos does a mandatory two week active duty with the marine corp and is stationed on a small island off San Juan. His battalion is supposed to do large scale maneuvers but, when the captain catches Carlos with a lady companion, libations and gourmet foods, he throws a fit and threatens to make his two week stay beyond miserable. Come to find out, Rev. Mother is the captain’s cousin and they get in their own little war over their own respective charges, Sis. Bertrille being hers.

“May the Wind be Always at Your Back” – Bridget and Joel, two of the older children at the convent, won the prize for the students with the highest marks in school. The prize is a day away from the convent and dinner at The Captain’s Cabin, a nice restaurant in town. After much persuasion, they decide to go. Joel has a crush on Bridget but she has a crush on Carlos.

“Love Me, Love My Dog” – Janus, a gypsy and reformed thief, takes the rap and is carted off to jail when his dog, Raffles, snatches a purse. That leaves Raffles to fend for himself. While the children are on an outing with the sisters, Raffles befriends them including one introverted child, Jaime. Of course the children want to keep him but Sis. Bertrille reminds them of the strict ‘no pets’ policy at the convent. Mother Superior agrees to temporarily lift the ban in hopes Raffles can help Jaime. Jaime runs away with Raffles when he hears the sisters talking about calling the pound.

“You Can’t Get there From Here” – Sis. Bertrille takes a joy flight only to get stuck in a downdraft and lands on a deserted island. Her coronet is wet and torn and she fears she will never get off the island. But, as luck would have it, who should she run into but Carlos! He, too, was stranded on the island after one of his lady friends tossed him off his own yacht.

“The Flying Nun” is a delightful series and quite wholesome. The scenery of San Juan is beautiful and the plots pull you right in. It’s a wonderful family-friendly show. We award “The Flying Nun” our Dove Seal of approval.
