Fifteen-year-old baseball player Landis Sims was born with a quad-congenital limb deficiency, which means he is missing both hands and feet. He narrates this gently-told story about how he rose above his challenges, as he takes the viewer on an 8-year journey from a plucky little leaguer into a dedicated young man. We bear witness to Landis’ dedicated spirit and the loving support of his friends, colleagues, and family, especially his mother Amanda. When she speaks about her boy and the daily challenges he faces, we cannot help but see her heart for her child, and how she is strong precisely because of him. In addition, the doctors and specialists are amazed daily by this young man and are pushed to achieve new goals by designing special prosthetics to assist such unique circumstances.
The most enlightening aspect of this story is Landis himself, as he has refused to give up on his dream of being a varsity baseball player. When we finally get to see him trying out for the high school varsity team, with new prosthetics that help make him be the best he can be, we are committed to his success right along with him. We are more than curious to see how he will rise to such competitive circumstances. We grow as confident as Landis that anything is possible when we see the training he receives from Major League Baseball’s best, including professional pitcher Joe Musgrove and manager Joe Girardi.
This is an extraordinary story of bravery, commitment, and hard work. As Landis recognizes his deficiencies, yet rises above them, we are challenged to believe that the message he repeats about making the most of what you’ve got is a real lesson for us all. Everyone has their own challenges to face in life and will be called to do hard things. Landis Sims motivates and encourages everyone to live without limits.
