The Story of Jacob and Joseph

The classic story of two brothers who turn against one another out of selfish greed. Colleen Dewhurst stars as Rebekah, who gives birth to twin boys, Esau and Jacob. Though Esau is the first-born and entitled to his family's fortune, Jacob is Rebekah's favorite. Through a cunning and devious scheme, Rebekah helps steal Esau's birthright from his aging father, Isaac. The deception tears the family apart for twenty years, but just as reconciliation brings Jacob and Esau together, a new generation of envy is born.

Jacob's sons, who envy their brother Joseph, sell him as a slave to a passing caravan. Joseph is taken in chains to Egypt, but he astonishes all with his talents and becomes the Pharaoh's chief adviser. But Joseph cannot forget his family, and his forgiveness of their cruelty is a lesson in morality that will live forever.

Dove Review

This movie, basically divided into two parts and featuring the lives of Jacob and his son Joseph, is a very biblical film in its portrayal of the stories taken from the book of Genesis. The clothing and sets seem very authentic for the period and the actors who portray Jacob and Joseph, Keith Michell and Tony Lo Bianco, bring an earnestness to their roles that serves the movie well.

The story, being true to its time, pictures Jacob with two wives and two servant women, and is therefore recommended for older children, ages twelve and above. The story of Jacob and his older brother Esau, who sold his birthright to Jacob, as well as the story of Joseph and his dreams, are vividly portrayed. Overall, this is a wholesome and scriptural story which gives us closer glimpses into the lives of Jacob and Joseph. The ending seemed a bit abrupt but the good news is I wanted to see more. We gladly award our Dove “Family-Approved” Seal to the picture.
