This is a realistic drama which reveals a high schooler’s struggle over the death of his best friend. Cameron Stiles (Andrew Lawrence) pretends he is going to go to a movie and has his best friend John (Jake McLaughlin) ride along so as to fool Cam’s parents. However, he is actually going to a party. Cam’s friend John really doesn’t want to be there. He has a goal of running a sub-par four-minute-mile and would rather be doing something else. When Cameron stays more than the hour he had promised John, John leaves on his own. Running home at night, a car which doesn’t see John strikes him and he eventually dies.
The focus of the film becomes Cam’s inability to forgive himself. Soon he takes up the dream which John had, to run a mile in just under four minutes. Cam’s dad, the Athletic Director and football coach (Treat Williams) is furious when Cam decides to leave the football team. As Cam’s mom (Joanna Going) tries to persuade the father to see things the way Cam does, the fireworks continue…until a turning point takes place.
This is a well acted drama with an important theme and the topics of forgiveness and the importance of family are to be commended. We happily award our Dove “Family-Approved” Seal to this DVD. Enjoy chasing the dream with Cameron.
