The kids of “Hurleyville” hit a homerun with this DVD. They nail two of the Ten Commandments with modern story-telling in amusing ways. Actually, all ten are mentioned in episode one but the emphasis is on two of them, which is covered in the two episodes on the DVD, namely “One God” and “Idols”. The kids include a character who can spout out scientific facts and historical knowledge like it’s second nature, and the girl who fantasizes that she is superstar “Naomi Ramoni” and she has to decide if Naomi or God comes first when Naomi’s concert falls on the same night she helps out at the local soup kitchen.
The kids keep it interesting as they do various things such as making their own version of a “Star Wars” film and one kid is dubbed “Spielberg”. One of the funny moments comes when the would-be actor says, “You killed my papa.” “No, I AM your papa!” replies the other kid. These kids are enthusiastic in their acting and commitment and the themes of serving the one God in addition to having no other idols are themes which obviously are still relevant in today’s world. They also teach some history regarding the founding of Hurleyville in Texas.
Kids will relate to these kids, such as the one young man who winds up with cake frosting on his face, and a girl named Lucy who, when being recorded on video is told “Say ‘Hi Lucy'” replies “Hi Lucy”. One girl wants to go to a concert but has to decide between that and feeding people at the soup kitchen and in a neat twist her commitment is rewarded. A shy boy moves to town but ends up being a bully and there are other situations the kids are confronted with. These kids make it clear that God loves men and women and boys and girls and is a prayer away. We are very pleased to award this energetic and lively DVD our Dove “Family-Approved” Seal for all ages.
