Dove Review

Katy Perry grew up the daughter of missionaries and used to sing gospel songs performing at the age of 15. Now she is one of the hottest stars of pop music, appealing especially to young audiences. This documentary follows her during a one-year world-wide tour and gives the audience a clear view of the work and determination it takes to perform non-stop. Backstage and Front of Stage scenes take you through her grueling schedule. Katy always takes time during each performance to meet kids backstage. On stage her set resembles an enlarged candy store with bright colored designs and over-sized props. It is apparent that teens and tweens can’t get enough of her music and personality.

Unfortunately, this is where she falls woefully short of moral direction. In her own words, she “believe[s] in God but not all of the same details as her parents” and later she says she is “evolving.” However, her evolution seems not to be in a good direction. She is idolized by her young fans but her songs have lyrics like “I want to see your peacock, cock, cock” and “I kissed a girl and I liked it.” These are inappropriate for her young fans who belt out the lyrics as loudly as she does. Her brief marriage to Hollywood “bad boy” Russell Brand goes sour and her father during an interview seems more concerned with his ministry than he does with his daughter’s influence on young people.

Parents should be cautioned about her songs and we urge them to search out the words on the internet so they can be prepared to discuss her music with their kids. We cannot consider this a family film, but pray that Katy will reflect on her brief public life, reinforce her influence on teens with positive messages, and return to her Christian roots.
