Pastor Shepherd

YouTube sensation, Pastor Shepherd makes the leap from cyberspace to the big screen in this comedy about a hapless freeze-dried pet salesman who finds himself out of work, and bound for an End Times Revival Event with some seriously quirky traveling companions. Shepherd lives with his elderly mother, a pill-popping television junkie who now faces bankruptcy for sending all of her money to smooth talking televangelists. When Pastor Shepherd loses his job, he takes his family doctor's advice and hits the road with his mother, their free-spirited neighbor Annamarie-Ah (Maria-Elena Laas), and her ill-tempered father Phil (Danny Trejo) in order to attend a revival event that promises to transform their fate in ways they never thought possible.

Dove Review

This movie contains very unique humor. It basically uses exaggeration to make a point about how some TV evangelists milk people for money and how that some well-meaning people give to the point of hurting themselves to support a TV ministry. The exaggeration also includes a TV minister saying, “Jeeeessssus is here” instead of just saying, “Jesus.”

Pastor Shepherd is a freeze-dried pet salesman and although the freeze dried dog he carries with him may not look totally realistic, the idea may turn some viewers off. He intends to jump from internet evangelism to TV. In one scene a TV minister sells a book titled “How to get rich by sending me money” and it is free, but the shipping cost is $81.64. One scene I enjoyed takes place when Pastor Shepherd’s mother is placed in the hospital and he enters to see a patient all bandaged up and thinks it’s his mother, only to hear a nurse say, “Sir, she’s over here” and she is resting peacefully in the other bed in the room, thankfully without bandages.

There are a couple of utterances of strong language which means we are awarding our Dove “Family-Approved” Seal to the movie for ages twelve plus rather than all ages. Its sophisticated themes would be a bit much for very young viewers at any rate. If you want to watch a minister who is very unique, “Pastor Shepherd” just might be for you.
