In 2017, Jenn Gotzon married fellow actor Jim Chandler, bringing a new angle to her decade of acting experience. Now, the two of them work together on projects, like the upcoming romance The Farmer and the Belle, telling the story of their courtship, and encourage each other in their professional careers as well as their marriage. On April 9, Sunshine in Heaven will debut digitally, On Demand, and on DVD, sharing the real-life story of Jan Hurst.

Hurst was married for for forty-four years to her husband Steve, a veteran of the United States Air Force. Through the past and the present, Sunshine in Heaven tells their story, in their twenties as they met and experienced Hurst’s father’s distrust of other soldiers, and the present after a terrible accident threatens their future and their faith. Jenn plays one of Hurst’s daughters, Terri, under the direction of Wayne Boone and alongside Corbin Bernsen, her collaborators on another true story, My Daddy’s in Heaven.

“I’ve been blown away by Wayne’s cinematography and flavorful visuals on screen,” gushed the actress. “The colors change from the past to the present, providing depth of our visualization, but he also focused on our ability to show the five layers of grief.”

To understand her role better, Jenn says that her marriage to Chandler allows her to explore a deeper space, to consider her lines and character development ahead of shooting film. She also found her interaction with the real-life Terri to be helpful in seeing how Hurst’s daughter handled herself during the trauma. Playing a real-life character allows her to hear the person’s actual cadence, and consider what they really did in the situation, whether it’s a movie like My Daddy’s in Heaven or Sunrise in Heaven.

“How do they behave under pressure?” she asked. “How do they achieve peace? It’s my job to faithfully, truthfully depict them on screen. Terri found herself wanting to cry but withholding it, as she worked to be reserved. She doesn’t naturally show emotion.”

“I always pray and ask God to guide me in the role. I had vision of getting bangs to show off some of Terri’s personality even though I haven’t had bangs since I was a little girl. Then I talked to her for the first time and found out she’s had bangs since before the events of the movie!”

Focusing on the movement of the Holy Spirit, Jenn has focused on films that bring faith and hope in the midst of hardships. “I don’t want it to be cheesy,” she explained, “but there’s an authenticity that shows how we look at God in these moments. I get to show that we can rub off on people, on each other, and inspire prayer and breath that the wounded soul needs.”

As she continues her career, Jenn hopes that she and her projects will provide Biblical values to girls that show their value isn’t based on appearance. She and Chandler are focused on using their story to show how their identities are shaped by real-life love, and walking alongside others exploring a journey of faith and love.

Sunrise in Heaven does that, proving once again how she’s staying true to her mission, telling stories of love and faith that triumph over tragedy.
