Four Centuries of American Education

Study the efforts and accomplishments of the early heroes of education! For four centuries, religion, morality, and knowledge formed the core elements of American education. However, in recent decades, teaching and learning have taken a more secular approach. This 59-minute documentary discusses the effects of both religious and secular philosophies on education and sheds light on the figures that helped shape the way in which history's students were taught.

Available individually or as part of The American Heritage Collection: Seven DVD Set, this DVD reaches back to the beginnings of formal education to bring viewers a complete picture of the shift from Christian classrooms to today's more worldly methods of imparting knowledge. Hosted by renowned religious historian David Barton, this DVD explores America's Bible-based beginnings and how Christians can apply the wisdom of our ancestors to make a difference today.

Dove Review

The content of this video regarding our education system of the past amazed me. This is a very informative video regarding the morals and reasoning behind the education system in this country. I believe this to be a great learning tool for anyone and everyone when it comes to education. It just amazed me to learn that some of our top colleges, primary and secondary schools once were based on the morals in the Bible and the freedom to read the Great Book. This video is very interesting and will make viewers stop and analyze what is happening in our schools today.

The question is asked in the beginning, “By what standard should a good education by measured?” We learn that American elementary school children handled difficult math problems in the past, problems that would tax most kids now. As the changes in how our constitution is viewed today are explored, Barton mentions “The Federalist”, a book which was about the intentions of the constitution. I was amazed to learn that Harvard’s motto used to be, “For Christ and the church”, and “For the glory of Christ.” Years ago Bible study courses were used in Dallas high schools and a sound education based on God’s word was the norm. We learn that Thomas Paine attacked schools which held anti-religious views in their sciences. Many lessons featured the importance of Jesus, the Golden Rule, an extract from the Sermon on the Mount, as well as other biblical themes of importance.

We are behind this DVD all the way and gladly award it five Doves, our greatest rating.
