Dove Review

Sunnyville is where this trio of friends live and play, namely Beezbee the bee, Peanut the giraffe, and Brooklyn the lion. As Easter approaches, this trio of friends are getting ready for a good time. It’s a time for candy, toys, games, and Easter egg hunts. “I love Easter eggs!” declares Beezbee. “They’re totally delish!” says Peanut.

Brooklyn wonders where eggs come from? Not just Easter eggs but any eggs. They wonder at first if bees or lions lay eggs? “I don’t think we can,” replies Brooklyn. Beezbee says that bees lay eggs but they are too small for Easter eggs.

This charming movie is filled with dance and song numbers and sure enough, soon the gang is dancing the “Good Fortune” dance. There is a learning dance (among several others) and the phrase, “Kick up your heels!” is appropriate. A peppy song which features the words, “You were born to win” is featured, and the positive lyrics are an added blessing as this song encourages kids to believe in themselves.

Santa himself stops by to say hello to Brooklyn, Beezbee, and Peanut, and he tells them that they are all on his “nice” list. A reference to some characters being “goofballs” is made, and Santa replies, “Goofballs can be fun to be around. They’re never boring!” Santa decides to give the three a gift, and he says it doesn’t have to be Christmas to give someone a gift. He adds it’s never a wrong time to tell or show someone they’re appreciated. And another positive theme is introduced when one of the characters says, “You should always speak positively about your friends.”

There are some clues that are dropped as to where eggs come from. And the trio keeps searching for answers. Lolly the dragon tells them that mama dragons do lay eggs, 20 at a time! “Dragons must live in huge castles!” states Beezbee. And Lolly adds that dragon eggs are made of clear wax, “so we can see right through them!”

There are more song and dance numbers as the trio continues to search for answers about eggs. One song talks about climbing higher. “Get up!” is one of the lines, and Lolly, a baby eagle, a chick, baby zebra, and a cub all dance in unison. Of course, there are puns, too. At one point Beezbee comments regarding a story, “EGGcellent story!” And, later, a comment is made about “EGGstraspecial jokes!”

And Fritz the monkey, with his high-pitched voice, is an ice cream salesman . . . er, monkey, and he mentions his Easter flavors of cotton candy and chocolate egg cream. Fritz, who has thousands of ice cream flavors, gives a history of how he came across a magic lamp, releasing a genie who granted him a wish for setting the genie free. He wanted an ice cream truck and received a magical one. The truck was capable of letting Fritz create as many sweet treats as he wanted. And he has a special chocolate factory to create Easter eggs for everyone.

There are more dances and puns. When an idea is mentioned, Beezbee says, “That has to BEE it! See what I did there?” And everyone is wished a Happy Easter by the conclusion.

There are wonderful themes to think about and to discuss with kids, including the idea that everyone is important and it’s never a bad time to show appreciation or to give a gift to someone. For these positive reasons this wholesome film has earned our Dove Seal for All Ages.

The Dove Take:

This wonderful and imaginative film about Easter is suitable for all family members and not just at Easter time, but during any old time of the year!
